I have some feedback to share. I find Fed Wiki depressing. I'm using Wikis since 1996. My first wiki was your Perl wiki that I installed in the Mercedes-Benz intranet. We even met and talked in person at one of the EclipseCons. And I had a page at c2.com/bin/wiki?FrankGerhardt (from memory) but it doesn't exist any more.
So, via Patterns of Commoning I came to fedwiki and looked around, tried to play around, not getting into playing, no playground, and it leaves me with a bad feeling. commoning
That's all. Below is a transcript of my experience.
.
Apropos http://fed.wiki - confusing UI - not welcoming - a lot of "We..." where I think it's Ward - overall makes me a bad feeling of not understanding and exclusion - but also there is nothing here to see because other would probably have the same experience and leave - there is one guy, Ralf, at least - sad that my page on c2.com is gone - confused where I am, the location bar has some static previous URL :-/ - it does not have the c2.com quality/feeling - instead of feeling at home, it leads me to unknowns, where I'm lost and don't know what to do, e.g. close and get rid of - I can't see how I could make my own page like I did on c2.com. I can't see a playground. - WTF is this long URL http://fed.wiki/view/welcome-visitors/view/recent-changes/wiki.ralfbarkow.ch/federated-wiki-futures - WTF are those 30 spinning squares on the bottom right!? And now it's unresponsive - Why can't I use browser tabs. Why this 3-pane navigation (I hate it)
Apropos http://fed.wiki/view/welcome-visitors/view/how-to-wiki - doesn't clear things up - Double click on a paragraph to open the editor does not work for me - how can I close something? Print something? Bookmark something? Use it locally as a personal wiki? - if I find it complicated, it will never take off, me being the dummy test user - I can't see the social function where the wiki is a "meeting space" like a forum or chat room. Seems all far away for each other. - can't see how somebody would be a Recent Changes Junkie - (bad) surprise when the Recent Changes page changed and got a green border. Can not find the Recent Changes that I were on a moment ago. Back button goes somewhere else
Apropos https://wiki.ralfbarkow.ch/view/welcome-visitors/view/more-more-more-telling-field-guide-to-the-federation - eventually I found this - and https://wiki.ralfbarkow.ch/view/welcome-visitors/view/youre-new-here - WTF who is this Ralf anyway? Why isn't this on Ward's start page? - hä? Description is confusing, 4 steps, drag them to done is useless UI shit if I don't understand what to do first of all - gave up after not being able to do step 1. Really, Ward, that's the next step in wikis!? - Claim the site, hä? I only want to make a page - I click the lock icon. It says Welcome back wardcunningham. I'm not Ward. Hä? - the UI jumped to Ward's start page, I lost my page, my context. At least the back button works now - with some URL pruning I'm at https://wiki.ralfbarkow.ch/view/welcome-visitors - here is a Create New Page form, interesting, I'll try that but I actually didn't want to mess up somebody else's wiki - I have a new page, it has a yellow border (what, why?), I can't edit this page. I want to cry, holy shit, what a UX, I'd better run away - I read previously that I should double click to edit. But the page is empty. There is nothing to double click. - I don't know if this is just a draft, or saved, and if saved then where, locally, on the server? Will it be lost if I navigate away? How would I find this new page ever again? Uaaaahhh. Makes me appreciate local markdown files. It might just be a research project, then everything is "ok" and blessed. - I'd like to ask Ward, how, after c2.com, he could make such bad thing - now I'll send my unedited notes to this Ralf and/or Ward, will try ward@c2.com - could not find Ralf's email. On http://ralfbarkow.ch/ I get a 403 forbidden. I guess that was my experience with Federated Wiki. Sad. Wasted time.

I see that your page on the original wiki was spammed by illegal characters, probably viagra ads or intention abuse. This is slow and unrewarding work to remove this which prevents the page being viewed by any modern language like ruby or javascript. Such abuse was a strong motivator for the current architecture. Bring your own disk and write on that. This is Sister Sites raised up a few levels.
We’ve set out to make a place to work together, not just talk about working together. We hold video calls twice a week to help people understand how that works. You are welcome.
Have you ever read the Unix Hater’s Handbook? Similar complaints there.
