Hierarchy of Horizons

Wiki developers and users meet regularly. In one such meeting a distinction was made between the engineer and the poet. I suspect the distinction relates to how broadly each is allowed to think.

The poet seeks an artistic interpretation of what is or what could be.

The philosopher interprets the world within a tradition of similar interpretations.

The scientist observes nature through repeatable experiment.

The engineer expands nature by assembly of parts to make a new whole.

The mechanic tends things such that they provide value now and into the future.

Richard Feynman distinguished knowing a thing from knowing the name of a thing. His student Carver Mead challenged engineers to understand parts and use them to their fullest as does nature. Programmers can make something out of nothing and would be wise to choose poetry as their best building material.

A programmer that wants to be a poet should write a program every day. Here programming has lead to thoughts jumping all over to illuminate opportunity for the next decade. See Plundering Markup
